Disclaimer: What you are about to see is a bit of a mess, be nice

So, I have spent a considerable amount of time browsing this forum and the interwebs in general looking for a way to improve the screen for my tall (6'2) and large (none of your business :) ) self.
Some of the options I have seen that you can purchase are good if not fantastic (madstad seems to be a particular favourite of tdm'ers) however being a cheap man I elected to take the DIY route.

This forum has some fantastic threads with regards to this which I will link at the bottom. So, the following was my setup during a UK tour last June. I was using a darkojak Large screen extender which did a good job;

Excuse the red boxes (these are now Black) but this was about 4 weeks after I got the bike and couldn't wait to go on a trip

This year, I am venturing much further afield, Namely the Italian lakes via France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

During my trip around the UK I got such a sore backside that i popped into a lovely dealership somewhere near stockport I think and purchased an Airhawk seat pad. This small amount of extra height put me closer to the stream of air but wasn't to much of an issue. I now have a peaked helmet which is being pushed upwards in this configuration so I need a fix.

The below was a first draft type of deal with some rather s*** quality sheet steel which was also way to thin. The concept is a rudimentary version of expensive adjusting screen brackets. The screen is a Givi Airflow off of a Yamaha XP500 Scooter (Excuse the mess)

It would need a trim to look a bit better however given its excessive size I wont use it. It is far to heavy for any kind of bracket or fairing mounts not directly supported by the frame.

So I also considered mounting the brackets and the adjusting screen part to my current screen however that would mean hacking up my screen which i am not keen on doing.

Then this after one day (the surface rust is just from air moisture alone)

So, after further browsing, the below thread on this forum by eagle6 is what I have done and have tested on the 850 (he did this on the 900) and it is a massive improvement. I used my tall screen (not that givi monstrosity) and even without an extender the air was pushed high enough over my head to stop any buffeting. This is thanks to tilting it forward 30 or so degrees. However, due to the width of the screen low down, i am now being hit by air low down. I will be fixing this by using some leftover perspex i had to try and make a screen to make some side extensions on the screen.

I finished so late last night doing this different system that I havent yet taken photo's but rest assured images will be going up tonight. The mounting was done with anodised aluminium flat bar beaten to death with an ajustable spanner (lost my hammer) so tonight after posting my first attempt with this new system I will be redoing it with heat and a vice and maybe a little bit of adjustable spannering and then if all is well i will update here.

Thanks haha  I have spent so much time doing other little mods in preperation for this trip (Spotlights, Electrical Accessory box) that i havent even been out on her much.

I'm afraid not, next up on my list of screen s*** to do is put the extender on the current setup :D I will however put up a high res image of the brackets and them also dissasembled with components incase anyone would like to try and do a version of their own :) It's a shame actually as I couldn't find them online anymore but they are relatively decent!

I don't intend to piss you off, but all that metal thingy looks like a very effective throat cutter !

Manufacturers use plastic screws for the screen to allow it to just pop-out (without breaking appart) in case of accident involving your head/neck going into it.

Not at all, I know, it is a bit mad max. Just need some spikes on the wheels and a bike that isn't yellow and its there haha

I took that off the second I got back from the test ride in which the screen bent so much I was waiting for the bike to start flying

So here is attempt 2 following what eagle6 did in the link

Aluminium Flat bar from wickes to the tune of £6.50 and the result as I said is fantastic

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko6_540.jpg

And another....

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko1_540.jpg

and another :) ..........

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko2_1280.jpg

Sorry about the size of that last one haha

I am going to have to reduce the sizes of the brackets and bring the screen about 1 inch closer to the fairing which should make an improvement. Also I am going to try over this weekend to make the perspex extenders on the sides and, of course, I will report back and upload more pics (Everybody loves pictures  )

Also, I have taken some basic pictures of the darkojak screen extender brackets. They are basically 2 metal pieces (one about 2mm and the other 3mm poss 4mm thick) with threaded holes all round with the exception of the holes to mount the screen.

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko4_540.jpg

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko3_540.jpg

Really fantastic bit of kit for it's price (Ghost bikes sell the Givi equivalent on eBay for £100.71 with a tinted version being £15 more!). They are still for sale on eBay but due to the seller of them being away it wasn't showing.

For any interested in where I got mine from, the eBay sellers name is moto_adventureltd.

And finally, the below was my first attempt before all of this bracketry to increase the wind protection.

tumblr_oq5f5oSq1p1vtyehko7_400.jpg

The left is the extender they provide and the right was my terrible attempt to make a screen. I have a whole new respect for the work that goes into getting these screens right and working with perspex/acrylic.

So, once I have got the current attempt nailed I will put up another post with a step by step of what you need and how to do it and hopefully this will be the winner as a solution!
