Hello all,

New here & not too familiar with my recently acquired TDM 850 ("cocktail" Red US 92' with only 3300 original miles).

The mice and other critters have been calling this "barn-find" their home for quite awhile.

After removing the nests and such, trying to see if I can get it running w/ a min of work before I decide what to rebuild first.

Gas (turpentine) in the tank was quite nasty.

Anyway, I'm trying to identify the purpose of two rubber tubes coming off the side /rear of the carbs. The parts diagrams call it a "pipe"

Yamaha p/n 4CM-14148-00-00, labeled part #58 on many carb parts lists.  What is their purpose, and where is the opposite end supposed to terminate?

On the whole, the machine looks original, except for a K&N air breather (what's left after removing the critter nest) and a Yoshimura exhaust.

Previous owner looks to have had a minor mishap - scratching  the side fairing and breaking a turn signal, etc.- and then put their ride away for good.

I've tooled around cars before, but limited work on bikes.  And I think I've F'd-up every carbeurator I've ever touched.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

They're vent/breather pipes and the opposite ends don't connect to anything. :)

I Would open the carbs drain screws first and run some new fuel through them,
Mne had a blocked idle jet on one carb tho.and I would say you might have to take them apart to clean them.

Thanks all.

I thought perhaps there was a missing connection I'd overlooked.

I've been careful taking it apart, keeping the nuts & bolts matched to their respective parts.  Also taking some pics to help me remember the path to putting it all back together- a bit less messy than leaving a trail of bread crumbs ;)

The gas tank required a bit of work -an acid bath and sealer to remove a bit of rust and recondition it.  So if that's any indication, the carbs may need a bit of work also.

Thanks again,

Walt

Hi Cubed!

Welcome!

Congratulations Grandma (NOVA). Very little round, 3300 miles is a new
bike. You have a nice work ahead, lubrication, cleaning, (battery?) and so on.

On the safety aspect, I suggest that you do a thorough inspection on the tires.
Old tires can be resected and a big risk, especially that it is a heavy bike,
and achieves good speed too fast.

I want the red cocktail 92, gives you much joy. I would love to see

pictures of phoenix.

Cheers!
